Robert Huth looks back fondly at the Tony Pulis pre-season programmes that nearly killed him.

The teak tough former centre-half, now aged 38, has looked back on his time atStoke Cityand the highs, lows and challenges of his career in an entertaining interview with Duck magazine, which is on sale at the bet365 Stadium today.

He talks about going up against Arsenal, his hardest opponent and most painful moment - and those summer months at Clayton Wood whenPulisgot his squad running.

NOT EVEN A TALKING POINT -Every word from Alex Neils pre-Birmingham press conference

I remember my first pre-season - it was horrendous, said Huth. Running, running and more running. They even had a little hill built at Clayton Wood, too. Wed start with a 10K and then wed do what we called The Pulis Run later. If we did that well, then we might have got the footballs out later.

I kind of liked it though. Listen, youd go to nice places, in nice hotels, with up to 30 other blokes your age who had your back and it was your job. Hard work is a necessity, and while we might have moaned about it, we all knew it gave us the edge over some other teams.

Our fitness and mindset won us so many games. We also saw our fans paying good money to travel to the likes of Austria and America too, and they deserved to see us giving our all and also being sociable with them when we could. I always appreciated the fact that our pre-season was often their holiday.

Saying all that, I think I nearly died twice, training was that hard! But it was brilliant for my career in terms of playing plenty of games and my fitness. I have never been fitter than when I was at Stoke. Was it the best Ive ever played? Possibly, but thats to be expected as I played so many matches.

A print copy of Duck will on sale outside the stadium for 4 before Stokes home match against Birmingham. It is also available online at
