Stoke Citystar Harry Souttar has been impressing his Australia teammates in training after joining in the first time in a year.

The 24-year-old centre-half has been named in Australias 26-man World Cup squad and is hoping to regain the starting place he had before anterior cruciate ligament damage last November.

They have been training in Qatar ahead of next Tuesdays daunting Group D opener against France and there wont be any friendlies to give a hint about the thinking of manager Graham Arnold.

His old defensive partner Kyle Rowles is also coming off a long-term injury and it is a big decision against a possible front three of Kylian Mbappe, Antoine Griezmann and Ballon dOr winner Karim Benzema. Milos Degenek, Bailey Wright and Thomas Deng are also pushing for selection.

Rowles said: Harrys coming along very well. Hes obviously got some minutes as well, back at Stoke. Hes looking fit and strong, very sharp as well.

Souttar was able to come through one match at club level, the full 90 minutes of a 2-0 win over Luton, before flying to Qatar. He was left out of a trip to West Bromwich Albion four days later as a precaution after so long out.

His new tattoos have been spotted, including a stag on his left arm and an Australia coat of arms on his left calf, with 606, his Australian cap number

Wright added ina training camp press conference:Every single one of us right now from every position is fighting for that shirt come the first game against France.

Obviously Ill be ready to play if Arnie wans me to. I want that shirt and Im not the only one that wants that shirt.

The strength of the group is that we have a real healthy competition for places on the pitch. Were all mates, we all get along well but we push each other and we all want that shirt. I think thats the most important thing.
